Cognitive dissonance is typically experienced as psychological stress when an action or idea is psychologically inconsistent with the other, people do all in their power to change either so that they become consistent.

They tend to make changes to justify the stressful behavior, either by adding new parts to the cognition causing the psychological dissonance (rationalization) or by avoiding circumstances and contradictory information likely to increase the magnitude of the cognitive dissonance (confirmation bias)

Learning to let go has been a subject of personal reflection this week, there is a lasting change that occurs from when experiential avoidance turns to adaptive acceptance.

Listen not just to the siren song of nature, but to the discordant hums that vibrate.
Within a skeletal embrace, a paradox nestled.

It whispers a truth- that the human condition is one of perpetual unease, a grappling with the tension between what is and what could be.
This dissonance is not a curse,
but a vital part of the human hymn.

An unease compels one to question slumbering truths.
A reminder perhaps that growth thrives not in inertia, but in constant dance between the familiar and the disquieting.
It is the impetus for innovation, the spark that inspired our desire for harmonious coexistence.

Making of The Mycobloc Chair!

Getting those hands dirty while asking-
What does mycelium like?
How does mycelium grow?
Am I intervening too much?

From cutting the straw, inoculating the bags, preparing the sawdust, bagging the substrate to finally sculpting it onto the chair, this process taught me how to keep the final vision alive and to create something I believe in.

The process of creating art is a deeply emotional and personal one and I’ve learnt how much the amazing people I meet along the way influence the work I create.
Working with the folks at @nuvedo, supporting me throughout and making this process easier has made this project possible. 🫶

The Mycobloc Chair

This is a monobloc chair from Bangalore that had gone missing for a while, having gone unnoticed for a long period of time- it’s whereabouts were traced and located through observant members of our community. It was found in a peculiar and unfamiliar state- overcome by nature, in a state of decomposition. Ganoderma Lucidum aka Reishi is a type of mushroom that is typically found growing on decaying tree stumps, however in this case, it was found thriving and colonizing our plastic chair.
Has reishi adapted to various other abundant nutrition?
Has plastic succumbed?
Has the monobloc found it’s final resting place?

Our chair was procured from the streets of Bangalore, the previous owner had left it to accompany the street dogs. A typical monobloc chair can appear in various forms- broken, repaired or in various colours. It is usually free of geographical context, a ubiquitous symbol of modernist principals and mass manufacturing. The chair thrives across various strata’s of socio economical environments, a true symbol of democratic design. Is it, however, good design?

Usually invisible, forgotten, neglected and always non biodegradable.

The Mycobloc chair is a project that juxtaposes two materials from two eras- the modernist plastic overcome by the future- biofabricated mycomaterials. This irony depicted through the clashing of two materials from different worlds colliding is doing so silently, much like the biomaterial revolution.
The silent yet commanding presence of the chair aims to evoke discomfort, curiousity and wonderment- of a possible future where the materials we surround ourselves with don’t go unnoticed, but celebrated.

Our (tiger? 🐯) textured mycelium bowl caught us by surprise. It’s unique pattern was caused by the biodegradable cling film it was wrapped in, which created uneven growth on the surface of the bowl. It may also be the mycelium beginning to digest the cling film. I believe this uncovers exciting pattern making possibilities that I can’t wait to experiment with!

Crafting with mycelium gives us the opportunity to co-fabricate with the matter that surrounds us, and this bowl is a testament to the silent harmony between natural growth and human intervention.

The Growing Materiality workshop.

We designed our first ever hands on experience, exploring the art of crafting with mycelium! Designed to encourage a dialogue about democratic design through collaborating with natures architects. We delved into and dissected our lens of urban disassociation with nature, in the process.

Beginning with spores, carrying the promise of a more sustainable future. Mycelium wove it’s tale of connecting life under our feet, transforming from tiny threads to robust materials.

Our participants echoed the same resilience while creating their coasters and other ‘odd ball’ creations with us. Taking home an introduction to the magic that is mycelium, a summary of the process and a kit to grow at home.
